Developing animals have different nutritional needs than adult ones. Older animals also need an adapted diet.
It takes a week to make a healthy transition. For the first two days, mix 75% of the old food with 25% of the new food. On days 3 and 4, switch to 50% of each food. Then, on days 5 and 6, mix 25% of the old food with 75% of the new food. And finally, on day 7, you can feed your pet 100% of the new food.
A sudden change can cause digestive problems. Your pet might also reject the new food because it tastes different from what they’re used to.
Many of the foods we eat pose no risk to our pets, but there are foods that are poisonous to cats and dogs, including chocolate, onions, grapes and raisins. Candy and pastries, which often contain the artificial sweetener xylitol, can cause kidney failure and sometimes death. Table scraps, which are often fatty, are very difficult to digest and can even cause pancreatitis. To keep your furry friend happy and safe, it’s best to give them pet-friendly treats.
